SOROPTIMIST INTERNATIONAL

OF FORT BRAGG

WHALE RUN & WALK

The 26th Annual Whale Run and Walk starts and finishes in the heart of Fort Bragg on West Laurel St. The race course continues for a  short distance on city streets before crossing the Pudding Creek Trestle onto the all-time favorite course - the Ten Mile Haul Rd. - within eye and earshot of the sea throughout the run. Runners will be treated to what makes the Haul Road the single most popular outing for Mendocino Coast locals. The course first cuts across coastal prairie studded with wildflowers; sandstone bluffs  alternate with beaches and pooling stream-mouths, all flush with  waterfowl. Spectacular sea and sky vistas, the freshest ocean breeze anywhere, and an occasional offshore spout make this year's the classic Whale Run course. The course is mostly level on both paved and gravel roads. Early registration guarantees you a t-shirt.

Fort Bragg
Whale Festival

Regional microbreweries come to town, offering their best pilsners, stouts and ales for tasting at historic Eagle's Hall. Other events include arts & crafts fair, chowder tasting, art exhibits and guided whale walks at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens and MacKerricher State Park. While in Fort Bragg, don't forget to plan a whale watching boat tour on the sea with Whale Watching Charter Boats out of Noyo Harbor. Also that weekend, the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse offers great activities for the whole family, including information on the migration of our gentle giants of the Pacific.

WINNERS ~ 2010 Whale Run Raffle:

The Andiron two-nights stay ~ Noyo Sunrise member Faye Yee

Seaside Inn and Cabins in Little River, CA on the beautiful Mendocino Coast -- the funkiest, coolest spot on the coast, five minutes from Mendocino Village, close to beaches, hikes, wineries, and breweries, but private and quiet.

The Andiron is the newly-purchased (and newly re-named) inn of Scott Connolly and Madeline Stanionis, featuring rustic, redwood-paneled, mid-century (and newly redecorated) cabins and rooms. Each cabin is entirely unique with vintage, salvaged, recycled and rehabbed furniture and funk, and each has a private bathroom, deck with adirondack chairs, and barbecues. They share a magical hot tub in the forest. With weekend happy hours in the lodge featuring local microbrews, wine, and snacks, you've got a mighty fine vacation.

Madeline and Scott have just finished redecorating all of the cabins this fall, with these two (in particular) among their favorites and available to the successful winners in the raffle:

Cabin 1 - Nature
Nature is full-on, old-school CABIN-tastic. Lots of redwood, owls, canoes, deer, birds, and cabin-kitsch. It is a one room, pet-friendly cabin with king bed, kitchen, fireplace, bathroom, and deck.

Cabin 11 - Curious
Curious features all sorts of ways to indulge your curiosity about the world around you, including good old binoculars and telescope, field guides to flora and fauna, and just enough science and nature activities to keep things interesting when you're done with the sun and fun outside. It's a one room, pet-friendly cabin with king bed, kitchen, fireplace, bathroom, and deck.
The package is valued at $350 and is available anytime in 2010 (except Thanksgiving weekend).  Choice of cabin will be based upon availability.  The Andiron is pet-friendly and (under its previous name of Pacific Mist Bungalows) is the 2009 winner of BayWoof Magazine's "Beast of the Bay Award" for best pet-friendly inn.  Check us out at www.TheAndiron.com.
