The SIFB Book Club is this month reading Tales of a Female Nomad: Living at Large in the World by Rita Golden Gelman. We are meeting this Thursday, February 18 to discuss it and pick out our next selection.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book (which had been recommended to me by a friend in another book club). You might want to consider reading it, especially with your love of travel. Here is a bit about the book (taken from Amazon):
"When Rita Golden Gelman traveled to Mexico during a two-month separation from her husband, she hoped to satisfy an old craving for adventure and, in the process, rejuvenate herself and her marriage. Little did she know it was the beginning of a new life, not just as a divorcée, but as a nomad of the world. Since 1986, Gelman has had no permanent address and no possessions except those she can carry. She travels without a plan, guided by instinct, serendipitous opportunities, and a remarkable ability to connect with people. At first her family and friends accused her of running away, but Gelman knew she had embarked on a journey of self-discovery and a way of life that is inspiring and enviable."

2010 Quilt Show – Silent Auction
Last year’s Silent Auction raised more than $1500 thanks to the generous donations of Soroptimist and Ocean Wave members and others in the community. And, of course, thanks to the purchasers of all these donations. The profits from the Silent Auction are part of the Quilt Show income that is used for Youth Scholarships and Educational Grants for Women, as well as contributions to many service groups in our community.
Karen Coverston and Shirlee Paoli are the Silent Auction Committee again this year, and are asking for your help in gathering items for the auction. It’s time to box up the things that are collecting dust in a closet, well-meant but unused gifts, whatever! Remember your trash may be someone else’s treasure.
Small things can be grouped together; last year a basket of odd aprons and kitchen stuff sold for $25.00! Bring items to a meeting or call Karen or Shirlee to arrange a pickup. If an item has a story or history be sure to share that along with the value (if known), anything is welcome. Helpers to staff the auction booth are also welcome; there is a lot of activity at this booth!
The committee hopes to surpass last year’s income but they need your help to make it happen. Thank you – thank you – thank you!!
If anyone has an item to be donated you can drop it by my office. Redwood Investments is located at 319 N Main St, next to the Company Store. Our office phone number is 964-9700.
Or Contact: Karen: 964-6555 or Shirlee: 964-3180

2-1-1 is a goal of the HHSA. The Steering Committee, made up of HHSA staff, FIRST 5 Mendocino, and key community partners, has met regularly over the past 18 months to plan and make decisions leading to the best, most cost effective means to bring the 2-1-1 information and referral service to Mendocino County residents. By contracting with the Volunteer Center of Sonoma County, this will be realized on February 11, 2010!

Shows from some of our childhood days are now available on local Fort Bragg public Access TV. Read on.... from Lonna Oliver
From: Earl Oliver <earl@solie.org>
This is a little different then my usual newsletter. As some of you are aware, I have been working as a Production Assistant at our local Fort Bragg Public Access TV station (Mendocino Coast Television) for a little over a year now.
One of my tasks is to find new programming to put on our channels and recently I discovered a treasure trove of old TV shows from the 1950's that are now available to anyone because they fall under the doctrine of Public Domain, having been produced more than 50 years ago. Shows like Burns & Allen, You Bet Your Life with Groucho Marx, Your Hit Parade, The Jack Benny Program, The Life of Riley, I Married Joan, Beat the Clock, Howdy Doody, Mr. and Mrs. North, Cavalcade of Stars and much more. On "Uncle Earl's Classic TV Channel" I have examples of 13 different shows (including all of the ones listed above), with multiple episodes of each show, all cataloged so that they are easy to find and view. And it is all for free!
